The Brittle Boulders of Dwarf Planet Ceres

چکیده

Abstract We mapped all boulders larger than 105 m on the surface of dwarf planet Ceres using images Dawn framing camera acquired in Low Altitude Mapping Orbit. find that are more numerous toward high latitudes and have a maximum lifetime 150 ± 50 Ma, based crater counts. These characteristics distinctly different from those asteroid (4) Vesta, an earlier target Dawn, which implies Ceres’ mechanically weaker. Clues to their properties can be found composition complex crust, is rich phyllosilicates salts. As water ice thought present only meters below surface, we suggest also harbor ice. Furthermore, boulder size–frequency distribution best fit by Weibull rather customary power law, just like for Vesta boulders. This finding robust light possible types size measurement error.

Mineralogical mapping of Coniraya quadrangle of the dwarf planet Ceres

Ceres has been explored by NASA/Dawn spacecraft, which allowed for the discovery of the main mineralogical and compositional characteristics of Ceres’ surface. Here, we use mainly data from the Visible and InfraRed imaging spectrometer (VIR) in order to investigate the main spectral characteristics of the quadrangle Ac-H-2 Coniraya, one of the 15 quads in which Ceres’ surface has been divided. ...

Spectrophotometric properties of dwarf planet Ceres from the VIR spectrometer on board the Dawn mission

Aims. We present a study of the spectrophotometric properties of dwarf planet Ceres in the visual-to-infrared (VIS-IR) spectral range by means of hyper-spectral images acquired by the VIR imaging spectrometer on board the NASA Dawn mission. Methods. Disk-resolved observations with a phase angle within the 7◦ < α < 132◦ interval were used to characterize Ceres’ phase curve in the 0.465–4.05 μm s...

Near - Infrared Mapping and Physical Properties of the Dwarf - Planet Ceres

Aims. We study the physical characteristics (shape, dimensions, spin axis direction, albedo maps, mineralogy) of the dwarf-planet Ceres based on high-angular resolution near-infrared observations. Methods. We analyze adaptive optics J/H/K imaging observations of Ceres performed at Keck II Observatory in September 2002 with an equivalent spatial resolution of ∼50 km. The spectral behavior of the...

The mass of dwarf planet Eris.

The discovery of dwarf planet Eris was followed shortly by the discovery of its satellite, Dysnomia, but the satellite orbit, and thus the system mass, was not known. New observations with the Keck Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescopes show that Dysnomia has a circular orbit with a radius of 37,350 +/- 140 (1-sigma) kilometers and a 15.774 +/- 0.002 day orbital period around Eris. These o...

Irradiation Products on Dwarf Planet Makemake

The dark, reddish tinged surfaces of icy bodies in the outer solar system are usually attributed to the long term irradiation of simple hydrocarbons leading to the breaking of C–H bonds, loss of hydrogen, and the production of long carbon chains. While the simple hydrocarbon methane is stable and detected on the most massive bodies in the Kuiper Belt, evidence of active irradiation chemistry is...
